MAGIC MAKERS LIVE: MEIKA

Today’s featured Magic Maker blew me away with her imagery using the spring sets that were up back in March. Holy WOW! She brings such an unique perspective to the space and her imagery is stunning. Her style is bold, sharp, modern and alive. That is how I feel when I look at her work. So, without any further ado, Say hello to Meika!

Where are you located?

Oakland CA

How did you get into photography?

With taking images with my cell phone in college. I wanted to make sure I was capturing more of my own memories because I wasn't so great with doing that in middle and high school. I started to buy point and shoot cameras mid way through undergrad, and then eventually it turned into a huge passion because I started to get good. Haha.

What is your favorite aspect of photography?

Capturing memories for others. I know how much those memories mean! Also, grabbing an image that's unexpectedly dope.

Where do you draw inspiration from/who are you inspired by (industry or not)?

Literally everything and everyone. Sometimes I catch myself glaring at really dope scenes or living room setups in movies, and I'll take mental notes for future shoots, and then end up completely forgetting what the actual scene in the movie was about.

What advice would you give to someone starting out or struggling to find their creative voice?

Just go shoot. Get out, stop watching those how-to YouTube videos and go shoot. Like right now. I'm sure people hear that all the time, but honestly that's the best advice I get even til this day.

What is your favorite part about these images you submitted?

They're so raw. I edited them in a completely different way than I normally edit, so it gives them a little bit of differentiation between the other artists who may have shot using the same set ups at the Creative Space Studios.
